Cory Morgan leaving Indians boy soccer program

HICKORY — Cory Morgan has stepped down as the head coach of the boys soccer team at St. Stephens High School.

Morgan gave his notice to school officials and notified the team of his decision on Tuesday.

Former Red Devil football player Forney awarded

FOREST, Va. - Emory & Henry College junior linebacker Paul Forney has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, ODAC officials announced Sunday.

The Newton native wins the award for the second time in his career. Last season, Forney was selected for weekly honors after the Wasps’ victory over Maryville on Sept. 8.

Military values ingrained in coaching trio

A trio of St. Stephens High School teachers and coaches share more than just the location they work with students and athletes.

Bill Baker, Matt Jones and Matt Reep are all veterans of the armed services.

Baker, who has been the Indians head varsity wrestling coach since 1999, was drawn to the military at a very young age.

Harold L.Saine, 86, of Conover died Sunday,November 10,2013. The Saine family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover, NC.

Eugene Edward Bishop, 82, of Conover died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at Catawba Regional Hospice. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. at Bright Light Tabernacle Church.

Fred T. Foard senior midfielder Khong Lo is ‘dynamic’

NEWTON — Faced with admitting a freshman to his varsity program three years ago, Fred T. Foard soccer coach Scottie Goforth made a difficult decision.

“It’s a hard call to have a freshman on varsity,” Goforth said. “While they are technically ready, are they emotionally ready? It was an experiment that has paid off.”

PREP SOCCER: Tigers advance to 3A West final

NEWTON — The Fred T. Foard soccer team's dream season continued on Saturday.

The Northwestern 3A/4A champion Tigers (19-5-3) advanced to the 3A West finals with a 3-1 home victory against Weddington in the fourth round of the playoffs.

The Warriors, who knocked off St. Stephens to earn the right to play Foard, finish their season with a 17-8 record.

PREP FOOTBALL: Playoff brackets finalized

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has finalized its prep football playoff brackets as of about 2:30 p.m. EST, according to the NCHSAA's Rick Struck.

Below is a look at the first round playoff match ups, which take place next Friday, Nov. 15, involving area teams:

CLAREMONT — Two years ago, Rod Tatum was serving his country 6,000 miles away from home.

Following his return, the Bunker Hill wrestling coach is giving back to his fellow soldiers and teaching his wrestlers lessons in the process.

Strong second half lifts Maiden past Lincolnton

MAIDEN — Tied 7-7 at halftime, the Maiden football team kicked it into overdrive in the second half against Lincolnton.

The Blue Devils scored 35 second-half points on their way to winning 42-14 at home against the Wolves.
