Ragsdale replaces Richardson as 'Dads manager

The Hickory Crawdads' field staff for the 2013 season was announced Thursday by the Texas Rangers, including a new leading man.

Former 'Dads player Corey Ragsdale takes over at the helm as the team's field manager, replacing veteran Bill Richardson. The 30-year-old Ragsdale becomes the 13th manager in Crawdads' history.

Tigers come out roaring on mat after long break

Despite a two-week break from competition, the Fred T. Foard wrestling tem didn't show any withdrawal from the holidays on Thursday.

The Tigers (21-1) were dominant in a pair of dual victories on the mat against Mitchell County and North Lincoln.

Thomas Franklin Davis, Sr., 74, of Conover passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton.  Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Davis family.

How did Conover’s Michael Paysour prepare to ring in the New Year? Not by watching television  as a glass ball descended a pole in Times Square; not by watching fireworks or by clinking champagne glasses.

He celebrated the week leading up to the New Year by getting glue on his fingers and “pushing petals.”

Martin promoted at Newton Fire Department

The city of Newton is pleased to announce the promotion of Jimmy Martin to Deputy Fire Chief.

Martin, a native of Newton, has volunteered and worked for the city for more than 30 years advancing his career in fire service.

He started as volunteer firefighter in December 1979 and was later named volunteer captain.

Indians’ Kerigan Farley motivated by the past

Three years ago, Kerigan Farley was cut from the St. Stephens boys basketball program.

Twelve games into this season, he is on the Indians’ roster as its leading scorer.

The 5-foot-10 point guard has came a long way since he was told he would not be a member of the Indians hoops program in the fall of 2009.

Second half run powers Duke past Davidson

Amidst a sea of fans wearing red and blue at Time Warner Cable Arena on Wednesday, the Duke men's basketball team overcame a tidal wave first half against Davidson with a second half typhoon.

The top-ranked Blue Devils (13-0) scored 12-straight points to start the second half on their way to a 67-50 victory against the Wildcats in Charlotte.
