Maiden at Newton-Conover (postponed to Monday, Jan. 28)
Draughn at Bandys, postponed (likely to Wednesday, Jan. 30)
Bunker Hill at East Burke, still on
Fred T. Foard at Watauga, still on
St. Stephens at Alexander Central, still on (will play Saturday if they can't Friday)

Christopher siblings overcome opponents, obstacles

Seniors Anthony and Andrew Christopher both wrestle, but they share more than just a mat.

Separated by school lines, the brothers have battled through not only their wrestling opponents, but more than any high school student should ever have to.

Hawks hand 'Cats their 16th straight home loss

Thanks in part to forward Josh Smith and the Atlanta Hawks, the Charlotte Bobcats' lengthy home losing streak grew to 16 games on Wednesday.

Smith scored 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his 15th double double of the season, leading Atlanta to a 104-92 victory against Charlotte at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Bucs knock off Patriots in overtime, 71-69

The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team rallied from down 10 points at halftime against Patrick Henry Community College to come away victorious 71-69 on Wednesday.

The Bucs, who trailed for most of Wednesday's game, scored 40 points in the second half and took their first lead with 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Catawba County Library director named

Suzanne M. White, who is serving as Public Services Manager for the Rowan Public Library in Salisbury, has managed comprehensive library programs, services and personnel at two full service library branches in Rowan County for more than seven years, and has had a successful career in library services spanning more than twenty years, has been named Catawba County's new Library Director.

Trojans top Bears to move to 2-0 in CVAC

Bandys improved to 2-0 in Catawba Valley 2A wrestling standings with a victory against Bunker Hill on Tuesday.

The Trojans (15-16, 2-0) and the Bears (14-19, 0-2) also competed against South Caldwell (19-11).

PREP NOTEBOOK: Indians survive 8 OT marathon

St. Stephens picked up a Northwestern 3A/4A victory in boys basketball against Watauga on Tuesday, but the win didn't come easy.

The Indians survived an eight-overtime with the Pioneers to come away victorious, 103-98, in Boone.

Sipe’s Orchard gets gift

Sipe's Orchard Home recently received a special Christmas gift from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.

The $22,000 gift made possible the purchase of two Honda Odyssey vans for the Houston Transitional Living Center program.

The vans will make daily life at the cottage much easier.

Raid turns into shootout

Monday night the Hickory police department attempted to serve a warrant at a residence off Fairgrove Church Road when gunfire erupted.

Hickory's Special Operations Team along with uniform officers came under fire from the residence at 1544 31st St CT SE Hickory about 11:30 p.m.

Killian sworn in as District Court judge

January 22, 2013

Mark Killian, a noted defense attorney in Catawba County, was sworn in as District Court Judge for the 25th Judicial District at the old courthouse in downtown Newton, Friday.

The historic courtroom was filled with Killian's friends, family and colleagues as Superior Court Judge Timothy Kincaid administered the oath of office to Killian.
