NCHS raises more than $2,000 for ‘Coaches’

Newton-Conover High School entered this week with $1,068.93 raised for the “Coaches vs. Cancer” charity program.

After Monday night, the school more than doubled its total and neared its goal of $2,500 raised.

Catawba woman shot and killed

January 29, 2013

Catawba County Sheriff’s deputies shot an armed woman near Catawba, Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies responded to a 911 call from a residence at 4787 U.S. 70 East a little after 12:30 p.m.

The caller reported that a female family member there was armed and possibly suicidal.

Red Devils thrash Blue Devils on basketball court

January 28, 2013

The basketball rivalry between Newton-Conover and Maiden continued on the court Monday with a pair of ugly outcomes.

The Red Devils swept the hoops action against the rival Blue Devils at NCHS.

Bobcats start road swing with 93-85 loss to Bulls

Jimmy Butler scored a career-high 19 points and Nate Robinson added 15 as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 93-85 on Monday night.

Director wins energy leadership award

Barry B. Edwards, who has served as Catawba County’s Utilities and Engineering Director since 1995, has been named one of the winners of the 2013 Energy Leadership Awards by the Business Journal of Charlotte.

Wreck involves a school bus

January 28, 2013

Traffic was slowed on N.C. 16 South on Monday afternoon around 3:30 p.m., after a three car accident involved a Catawba County Schools school bus and three other vehicles. Highway Patrol officials said the pile up was the result of a driver failing to brake. The accident began with a Chevrolet Malibu failing to brake and colliding with a Chevrolet Tahoe.

Whisnant M.S. hoops tournament kicks off Tuesday

The Kermit Whisnant Memorial Midde School Basketball Tournament kicks off Tuesday at Newton-Conover Middle School.

Panthers' Rivera adds 3 assistant coaches to staff

The Panthers have announced three assistants have been added to Ron Rivera's coaching staff.

Carolina hired Ken Dorsey as their new quarterbacks coach to work with Cam Newton, Jim Skipper as running backs coach and Al Holcomb as linebackers coach.

Ex-Trojan, Hokie WR Justin Harper traded to Lions

January 27, 2013

Former Bandys standout wide receiver Justin Harper will have a new professional football home in 2013.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound wideout was traded on Friday from the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders to the British Columbia (B.C.) Lions.

Harper was sent with the Roughriders' third round pick in 2014 to the Lions in exchange for Lions slotback Geroy Simon.
