Truck strikes house

Newton Police and Fire officials investigated a truck that rolled into a house Wednesday morning at 311 North Caldwell Avenue. No one was injured and there was minimal property damage according to city sources.

Tuesday night the  Newton City Council agreed to change its zoning ordinance text amendment to allow indoor shooting range, gun and ammunition sales and ammunition manufacturing and assembly within the city’s general manufacturing district.

Red Devils, Bears and Indians gear up for postseason

Bunker Hill High School hosted a tri-match on the wrestling mat Tuesday with CVAC mate Newton-Conover and Northwestern 3A/4A foe St. Stephens.

The Red Devils picked up a 57-15 victory against the Bears to close out an undefeated Catawba Valley 2A slate, while the Indians notched a 49-25 non-conference win against Bunker.

Nadene Arndt Bumgarner, 87, of Catawba passed away Tuesday, Feb.  5, 2013 at Abernathy Laurels in Newton.  Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Bumgarner family.

Catawba Valley Community College’s Office of Multicultural Affairs invites the community to attend its Black History Month Celebration from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday., Feb. 28 in the CVCC Tarlton Complex (formerly CVCC Multipurpose Complex).

Entertainment begins at 6 p.m.; the program and awards begins at 7 p.m.

Pierce, Turcanu are friends through school's rivalry

Competing at rival high schools in the same sport in the same events, prep swimmers Jake Pierce and Sava Turcanu are the best of friends.

The duo competes Friday at the 3A state swimming championships at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, while supporting one another.

Eighth-ranked Bucs open season with 13-1 victory

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team kicked off its 2013 season on Monday at Henkel-Alley Field with a 13-1 blasting of the Lenoir-Rhyne junior varsity squad.

The Bucs improve to 1-0 on the year, while the Bears fall to 0-1.

James, Bosh push Heat past Bobcats, 99-94

LeBron James scored 31 points and Chris Bosh added 23 to lead Miami past Charlotte 99-94 Monday night, the Heat's 10th consecutive victory against the Bobcats.

Dwyane Wade had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Miami, which has won nine of its last 10 at home. James was 13 for 14 from the field, for a career-best 93-percent shooting. The Heat improved to 19-3 on their home floor.
