When their number is called, Ben Hughes and Ben Pitts step up when needed for their team.

Pitts and Hughes are two of four seniors on the Fred T. Foard wrestling team, including Nick Rotenberry and Mikey Vincent.

George's triple double leads Pacers over Bobcats

Paul George knew he needed to have a good game after the way he played Monday night.

George posted his first career triple-double with 23 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists, and the Indiana Pacers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 101-77 rout of the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night.

Red Devils, Tigers in dual playoff action Thursday

The third and fourth rounds of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) dual team wrestling playoffs are Thursday with two Catawba County teams in action.

Newton-Conover (40-5) is the only county team home tonight, hosting a trio of teams, including Thomasville (36-3), Owen (16-14) and Piedmont (31-5).

Tigers survive, advance to dual team round three

In the biggest match of its season so far on Tuesday, the Fred T. Foard wrestling team got a big boost from its seniors.

The veteran quartet of Nick Rotenberry, Mikey Vincent, Ben Hughes and Ben Pitts each picked up crucial mat victories, helping the Tigers edge North Gaston, 32-37, to advance to the third round of the 3A dual team state playoffs.

Edna Elizabeth Griffey, 90, of Maiden died at her home Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013.  No services are planned at this time.

Lauren M. Feudale, 23, of Raleigh died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013. Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Hester convicted of double murder

February 12, 2013

Justin Ray Hester, 26, of Lenoir, was convicted of two counts of First Degree Murder Tuesday in Caldwell County Criminal Superior Court.

The defendant was sentenced to two consecutive life sentenced without parole in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction.

Charges linked in weekend arrests

Three arrests over the weekend were all linked to cocaine charges, while an arrest was linked to one of the three suspects.

Catawba says goodbye to town manager Barnett

After working for 28 months as the Town Manager for the town of Catawba, Brian Barnett is saying goodbye. Barnett’s last day as the Town Manager is Friday, Feb. 15.

Bobcats rebound behind Mullens to beat Boston

The Boston Celtics left Time Warner Cable Arena green with envy on Monday — thanks in part to the Charlotte duo Ramon Sessions and Byron Mullens.

Sessions drilled a 18-foot jump shot off of a screen from Kemba Walker with 25.7 seconds left, helping the Bobcats defeat the Celtics, 94-91, for their 12th victory of the season.
