Startown Elementary awarded $10,000 by Food Lion

NEWTON — A competition that began at the top of August has paid off for the students of the Startown Elementary.

The school was presented with a $10,000 check on Tuesday morning at the Food Lion location on West N.C. Highway 10.

Wreck sends Lincolnton couple to the hospital

NEWTON — Two people were sent to the hospital following a collision Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Robinson Road and N.C. Highway 10.

Local military duo part of Panthers-Patriots game

CHARLOTTE — As the New England Patriots battled the Carolina Panthers on Monday night at Bank of America Stadium, two local members of the military were part of all the action.

Conover resident Thomas Brandt and Statesville native Chris McBurney were involved in the pre-game festivites of the NFL game, which was televised nationally on ESPN.

The 24-year-old Carolina Panthers quarterback continued to show signs of maturity, leading his team to a thrilling 24-20 victory at Bank of America Stadium.

CVMC helping crack down on drunk drivers

November 19, 2013

A partnership between Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) and the District Attorney for Burke, Catawba and Caldwell counties will cut down on the time it takes to process alcohol related DWI cases.

A contract signed in early November means that blood from these cases will now be tested at CVMC instead of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) laboratory.

Hornets force 5 turnovers, win Southeast tournament

NEWTON — The Catawba County Hornets capped their dream season on Saturday with a 30-8 win against the Carolina Thundering Herd at Westside/Jaycee Park.

With the victory, the Hornets complete 2013 with a 15-0 record.

Bears win 10-straight for first time in history

November 19, 2013

SALISBURY — The Lenoir-Rhyne football team won its 10th consecutive game with a 48-15 triumph over Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference contest and regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

L-R (10-1, 7-0), ranked No. 14 in NCAA Div. II, rushed for 445 yards on the day.
