GASTONIA — Behind a record night from running back Kerrion Moore, Hunter Huss advanced in the 2AA playoffs with a close 34-28 victory against Bunker Hill on Friday.

The Bears finish their season with a 8-5 record.

Mary Jane Norman Luce, age 53, of Newton, passed away Wednesday Nov. 20, 2013. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Luce family.

New ordinances take effect Jan. 1 in municipalities

Today is the national observance of the Great American Smokeout, an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society in which smokers are encouraged to quit or make a plan to quit smo king.

Today also marks the official announcement of new ordinances effective Jan. 1, 2014 in the Cities of Claremont and Conover and the Town of Brookford that expand on local smoke-free policies.
