Carl Alvin Gentry, 87, of Conover, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. The Gentry family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Brown's late single pushes Indians past Tornadoes

Winning 4-3 in close games is becoming a tradition this week for the St. Stephens baseball team.

A single by Dylan Brown in the bottom of the eighth inning plated Konner Klingenberg from third base, allowing St. Stephens to knock off the defending Easter Classic champion Hickory, 4-3.

The Saint victory comes one day after defeating Fred T. Foard, 4-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

EASTER CLASSIC: Bears, Tigers win in consolation

Bunker Hill bounced back from a difficult loss in the opening round of the Easter Baseball Classic with an 8-2 win against Maiden on Tuesday.

In other Classic consolation action, Fred T. Foard took down South Iredell.

Nature trail gets facelift

After two years of hard work and dedication, Shuford Elementary parent Mark Pennell and the school’s Parent Teacher Organization are preparing to open the Shuford Elementary nature trail. The nature trail, located behind the elementary school, caught the attention of Mark Pennell after his daughter Saryn began going to the school.

No. 8 Newton-Conover upsets top-seeded Bunker Hill

What’s been a difficult season for Newton-Conover on the baseball diamond so far in 2013 got just a little brighter on Monday.

The Red Devils drove in 17 runs on 13 hits en route to stunning top-seeded Bunker Hill 17-4 in the first round of the Catawba County Easter Baseball Classic.

St. Stephens baseball coach Chip Watts likened his team’s performance in this year’s Catawba County Easter Baseball Classic to being in the NCAA tournament.

“We talked about March Madness and living for the occasion,” Watts said. “Big players make big plays in big ball games.”
