Special Olympics athletes invade Gurley Stadium

Guests, volunteers and athletes from across Catawba County flooded into Gurley Stadium at Newton-Conover High School to celebrate the Catawba County Special Olympics.

Events were held on the high school’s track and baseball field on Friday, April 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Patrick Henley ready for Junior Olympic appearance

John Henley knew his son was destined to be a gymnast after seeing his 7-year-old son Patrick backflip off of the family’s porch.

“He just decided he was going to flip and did it,†John said. “That’s when we said ‘oh my gosh.’†He decided he wanted to do gymnastics, and we started taking him.â€

Panthers draft another DT with second-round pick

The Carolina Panthers further solidified their defensive line on Friday night with the selection of Purdue defensive tackle Kawann Short.

The second-round pick for Carolina was its only of the second day of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman regarded Short as the best pass rushing defensive tackle in this year's draft.

Cooper, Crouse lead Lady Blue Devils to 17th win

The Maiden softball team picked up its 11th consecutive win of the season behind 14 runs on 13 hits Thursday in Claremont.

Jessica Cooper and Emily Crouse each drove in three RBIs, helping the Lady Blue Devils pick up a 14-3 five-inning road victory against Bunker Hill.

Panthers select DT Lotulelei with 14th overall pick
