Linebarger paces Tornadoes in win versus Red Devils

September 6, 2013

When Hickory needed a big play on the football field against Newton-Conover on Friday, Jahiz Linebarger was there to answer the call.

Linebarger rushed 18 times for 179 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Red Tornadoes earn a 33-28 win against the Red Devils.

As a team, Hickory (2-1) tallied 220 yards on the ground on 34 carries.

PREP FOOTBALL ROUND UP: Bears tame Tigers

Behind 419 yards of total offense, Bunker Hill defeated Fred T. Foard on the football field, 34-0, in Claremont.

The Bears tallied 294 yards of offense on the ground, led by Jordan Eckard’s 98 yards on 22 carries and a rushing score.

Colton Chapman led Bunker Hill (3-0) with 204 yards of total offense, including 125 through the air and 79 on the ground.

Crisis to dream: A 10-year journey

Laban Helderman had what he calls a mid-life crisis 10 years ago.

That crisis involved him leaving Duke Energy after 29 years and opening Buffalo Shoals IGA Supermarket and Hardware.

“As a boy I always wanted a hardware store,” Helderman said.

Wolfpack coach Lutz making impact on, off of court

Bobby Lutz is regarded by many as one of the greatest minds in the game of basketball today.

The Catawba County native and associate men’s basketball coach at N.C. State is also a champion for those battling mental illnesses.

Lutz spoke Thursday morning at Abernethy Laurels Retirement Community during “A Reason to Hope,” a special event that raised awareness for Alzheimer’s disease.

Sherrill running for Clerk of Court

Judy Hoke Sherrill, a long-term official in the justice system in this county, has announced her intention to seek election to the office of Clerk of Superior Court for Catawba County, subject to the May 6, 2014, Republican primary.

Sherrill is a native of Catawba County and a graduate of Newton-Conover High School.
