Richards wins 500th, Red Devils move into first place

The 500th win in the coaching career of Linda Richards may be one of her most important.

The Newton-Conover volleyball team rallied in a fifth-set tiebreaker to come away with a 3-2 victory against Bunker Hill on Tuesday.

Reynolds steps down as Lady Trojans head coach

The Bandys volleyball team entered Tuesday's game against West Caldwell with a new head coach.

Hannah Reynolds, who has coached the Lady Trojans in each of the past two seasons, was not with the team on Tuesday.

Somebody won $1M

A lucky lottery ticket sold in Catawba County won $1 million in Saturday’s Powerball drawing. The ticket, which beat odds of 1 in 5.1 million to match all five white balls drawn, was sold at Kangaroo Express #3026 on N.C. 10 West in Newton. The numbers for the white balls were 12-17-45-54-58.

ARTfest before the rains came

ARTfest 2013 was over almost before it started as heavy rains drove away both participants and attendees only an hour into Saturday’s event in downtown Newton. But those who made it out to the event ahead of the weather encountered a range of activities, foods, crafts, storytellers and musicians.

Wepner scores four goals, Red Devils beat Bears

September 23, 2013

NEWTON — Newton-Conover's Franklin Wepner entered Monday's SD-7 soccer game against Bunker Hill with a sick feeling in his stomach.

He left it with an appetite for scoring.

Wepner netted four goals against the Bears, including two in each half, to help the Red Devils earn a 4-2 conference victory at Gurley Stadium.

Blue Devils force three Spartan turnovers in victory

The Maiden defense forced three South Caldwell turnovers in a 38-14 victory against the Spartans in Lenoir on Friday.

Maiden improves to 4-0 on the season, while South Caldwell falls to 2-2 overall.
