JV FOOTBALL: Cougars control clock, beat Indians

September 19, 2013

Alexander Central ran the football and controlled the clock in a 26-16 junior varsity football win against St. Stephens on Thursday.

The Cougars (2-1) held possession for nearly 27 minutes in the contest, while the Indians (0-3) had the football for just over 12 minutes.

Joseph “Joe” Scott Jr., 66, of Conover, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. The Scott family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Cremations in Newton.

Newton ‘habitual felon’ convicted

After years of committing crimes, Jason Matthew Davis, 30, of Newton will spend no less than 51 months in prison.

Davis was convicted of felony possession of stolen goods and habitual felon status on Wednesday in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court.

Submerged but not forgotten

This month marks the 50th anniversary of Lake Norman’s construction.

The creation of the lake submerged the 70-person community of Long Island, N.C., the East Monbo Mill, 23 miles worth of roads and several other landmarks.
