Clausen, Gettis among 22 players cut by Panthers

The Carolina Panthers trimmed their roster from 75 to 53 players on Saturday.

Among the 22 players cut were quarterback Jimmy Clausen, wideout David Gettis, defensive tackle Sione Fua and cornerback Drayton Florence.

Ricky Taylor's 5 TDs pace Blue Devils in 55-29 win

Maiden running back Ricky Taylor did a little bit of everything for his team on the gridiron Friday.

The senior running back scored three rushing touchdowns, caught another and also returned an interception for a score, helping the Blue Devils win their home opener 55-29 against West Iredell at Blue Devil Stadium.

Trojan 'D' shuts down Tiger offense in 33-2 victory

The Bandys football team's defense showed know signs of weakness on Friday against Fred T. Foard despite some difficult conditions in practice earlier this week.

The Trojans (2-0) allowed minus-three yards of total offense from the Tigers in the 33-2 non-conference victory in Catawba.

FOOTBALL ROUND UP: Eckard, Bears claw Indians

Running back Jordan Eckard scored three touchdowns, helping Bunker Hill defeat St. Stephens on the road Friday night in Hickory, 39-26.

The Bears (2-0) led 24-6 at halftime behind touchdown runs by Eckard and one each from quarterback Colton Chapman and wideout J’len Wilson.

Panthers close out preseason, beat Steelers 25-10

With most of its first string starters on bench, the Carolina Panthers successfully closed out their preseason slate at home on Thursday.

Quarterback Derek Anderson threw two touchdown passes, helping Carolina defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 25-10 at Bank of America Stadium.

Anderson tossed both of his touchdowns in the first half, including a 35-yard pass to Ted Ginn, Jr.

Betty Marie Cornelius Beatty, age 84, of Sherrills Ford, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 29, 2013, at Abernathy Laurels in Newton. The Beatty family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.
