Community bonds in 'Red and White' scrimmage

August 9, 2013

The rain held off Thursday and several hundred football fans turned out for Newton-Conover’s second annual “Red and White” intrasquad scrimmage.

The Newton-Conover varsity and junior varsity programs both played in two 10-minute quarters.

Points were given on offense for touchdowns (six), first downs (one) and plays of 30-plus yards (two).

'Dads INF Ryan Rua promoted to Double-A Frisco

Hickory Crawdads infielder Ryan Rua was promoted on Thursday to the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders.

Rua is the seventh Hickory player this season be called up.

He joins relief pitcher and former Hickory Crawdad Alexander Claudio as part of the RoughRiders.

The 23-year-old Rua led the South Atlantic League in home runs (29), RBIs (82) and extra-base hits (54) this season.

Melvin Monroe Killian, 80, of Hickory went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at Catawba Regional Hospice. The Killian family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Cremations in Newton.

Armed bandit caught on camera

The Newton Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that took place Tuesday at the Kangaroo Store at 334 E. 20th Street. 

Officers were advised at 2:02 a.m. that a gunman, described as “a light-skinned black male,” entered the store and began calling for the store clerk.

Trojans gearing up for season under a new Lowman

The Bandys football team held its first full contact practice on Wednesday with a new leader in charge.

Trent Lowman replaces his father and longtime head coach, Randy, as the leader of the Trojans program this fall.

Aside from his father retiring, Trent said not much has changed for his squad from last season.

Orioles' Hunter Harvey continues his development

Former Bandys pitcher Hunter Harvey took the mound for the fourth time in his professional baseball career on Wednesday.

Harvey allowed two hits, one walk and struck out two batters against the Gulf Coast League Twins.

The Orioles won the game in 10 innings, 2-1.

Harvey’s outing on Wednesday follows up an eight-strikeout performance in his third appearance against the GCL Red Sox.

Wrestling with park’s future

Claremont City Council members were left with plenty of unanswered questions about the future of Francis Sigmon Park on Monday night during their August meeting.

The park, which has been sitting vacant since 2007 when the city took it over, is comprised of 27.1 acres valued at $145,500, or $5,369 per acre.

Attempted murder charge

A Claremont man has been jailed on an attempted murder charge after telling emergency operators early Saturday morning that he had shot his girlfriend, according to local law enforcement.

Richard Donnell Beatty, 56, of Beatty, 56, of 2742 Sherlock Street in Claremont.

'Dads Brinson returns from DL, homers twice in win

Hickory Crawdads center fielder Lewis Brinson made the most of his return from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Brinson homered twice, including a walkoff blast in the bottom of the ninth, to give the ‘Dads a 10-9 victory against the Greensboro Grasshoppers at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Prep football team scrimmages start on Saturday

All seven of Catawba County’s football teams are in scrimmage action in the coming week.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) officially designates Aug. 10 as the first day that teams can hold their first scrimmages.
