Tigers debut new stripes for football season

The Fred T. Foard High School held picture day on Thursday for its varsity and junior varsity football programs.

The Tigers varsity team debuted new Russell Athletic jerseys for their 2013 fall campaign.

The jerseys and matched are solid light blue with white lettering.

They are also trimmed in orange, and the word “FOARD” is on the front of each uniform above the number.

QBs Vick, Foles lead Eagles over Panthers, 14-9

Michael Vick was nearly flawless, Nick Foles looked sharp and the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback competition remains close.

Vick and Foles each led the Eagles to touchdown drives in a 14-9 victory over Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night.

Peggy Joe Crouse Huffman, 74, of Claremont died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. Memorials may be made to Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton.

Sheriff: Woman dies trying to flee attack

NEWTON — A Newton woman died early Wednesday in Gastonia when a semi struck her as she was attempting to flee from an attacker, according to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.

Former Red Devil Lyerly is at home with Trojans

Once a Newton-Conover football player, Antonio Lyerly is making new waves this season at Bandys High School.

Lyerly is serving as a volunteer wide receivers and defensive backs coach for the Trojans this fall.

He also plans to coach the Lady Trojans junior varsity basketball team this winter.

Lyerly spent the past two years as sports coordinator at a YMCA in Charlotte.

Lenoir-Rhyne donates football jerseys to Bunker Hill

Fans of the Bunker Hill football team will notice a new, yet familiar look this upcoming season.

The Bears will sport Nike jerseys, which were previously worn by the Lenoir-Rhyne University football team.

L-R announced a new partnership this past week with Under Armour to supply the school’s athletic programs with uniforms.

Claremont welcomes new officers

The road to full-time officer has not been a short one for new Claremont police officers, Cody Jarvis and Alan Russell.  The two men have offically been full-time officers for two weeks, but the both started their part-time law enforcement careers at Claremont.
