Local student travels to China for medical work

After graduating from the North Carolina School of Science and Math this summer, Newton-native Max Lowman traveled with the China California Heart Watch for three weeks in July to do medical work in rural China.

The program combined his language education, two years of Mandarin Chinese, and his interest in medicine.

Women patients give top marks to CVMC

Maiden gets final preseason test in Olympic Trojans

The Maiden football program officially finished its preseason on Friday with a tough test against an out-of-area team.

The Blue Devils hosted Charlotte Olympic in both junior varsity and varsity action.

It was the first scrimmage for the Blue Devils since last Saturday’s Lincoln County Jamboree.

Trojans get a new look with Nike football jerseys

The Bandys football team debuted new Nike game jerseys on Friday during the school’s photo day.

The Trojans will also be playing in the new look Garry Butler Memorial Stadium, which was outfitted with new home and away bleachers during the summer, as well as a new scoreboard and play clocks.

Indians football team takes their team pictures

St. Stephens High School held its football photo day on Friday afternoon.

The Indians are one of three Catawba County football teams with renovated stadiums this season, including Bandys and Foard.

St. Stephens kicks off its season on Friday, Aug. 23 at home against Bandys.

A body found last month in the Catawba River has been identified by the Catawba County Sheriff's Office as that of Kevin Glenn Bowman of Conover, who had been missing for some time. An article in Friday's Observer News Enterprise incorrectly stated that it was the body of a Claremont man who had gone missing near the river a few days before the body was found.
