Gym doubles size as it celebrates 5 years

The Perfect Workout opened to the public in August 2008 in downtown Newton. Five years later the gym has doubled in size as well as doubled in memberships.

“Some members have been here since the beginning,” Rashidi said.

“I have some of the same people in my classes.”

Catawba Co. connected to Charlotte 49ers 1st season

When UNC-Charlotte officially kicks off its first-ever football season on Saturday, four former prep standouts with Catawba County ties will be a part of the history.

Football players Matt Johnson (Maiden), Zach Bumgarner (St. Stephens) and Tanner Fleming (Fred T. Foard) will suit for the 49ers in their inaugural football game on Saturday in Charlotte against Campbell at noon.

Mission trip impacts Bears senior lineman Kyle Guins

A mission trip to Honduras during the offseason shaped the way Kyle Guins viewed the world.

The Bunker Hill senior offensive lineman has emerged as a leader for the Bears on the gridiron and is using his faith to bond his teammates together.

Guins and members of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Conover made the trek to El Progreso, Honduras in late July.

Ray Herman Boston Sr., age 91, of Hickory went home to be with his Lord and his wife, Norma, on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Trinity Ridge/Lutheran Home in Hickory. The Boston family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Conover.

Schools release early counts

School officials are saying everything has gone smoothly so far as students returned to classes starting Monday in both the Catawba County and Newton-Conover city schools.

Catawba County schools saw about 16,000 public school students walk through their doors on Monday, where 1,080 teachers awaited them.

Hickory's Linebarger wins first Golden Helmet award

August 27, 2013

Hickory High running back Jahiz Linebarger was presented with the first Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award of the season on Tuesday.

Linebarger, who also plays defensive back for the Red Tornadoes, helped rally Hickory to a 25-20 road victory against Statesville this past Friday.

He rushed for over 110 yards with two touchdowns against Statesville — part of 25 unanswered points in the contest.

Maiden resident Cherry named top rookie angler

Maiden resident and angler Hank Cherry is the Bassmaster Elite Series Rookie of the Year.

“Rookie of the year is a great foundation for my career,” Cherry said. “The guys in this rookie class are all great anglers, and it was a real accomplishment to come out on top. I’m going to build from here and someday get an Angler of the Year title.”
