Carrie Evelyn Byers Edmondson, 83, of Maiden, passed away Friday, July 12, 2013 at Abernethy Laurels. The Edmondson family is in the care of Robert F. Bennett, Funeral Service Licensee.

Non-profit is vandalized

Last week vandals in Conover damaged a statue that acted as a monument for the founder of Catawba County Parenting Network.

Hickory advances with 2 wins versus Gaston Braves

July 15, 2013

Hickory is one step away from the Area IV title series after a winning three of four games against the Gaston Braves.

Post 48 tallied wins against Post 144-266 on Friday and Saturday to advance to the third round of the Area IV playoffs.

Hickory defeated Gaston by a score of 4-2 on Friday behind pitcher Tyler Pait’s performance.

Bears, Indians both hire new coaches on Monday

Two Catawba County High Schools were busy on Monday, hiring a total of three new head coaches in three different varsity sports.

St. Stephens athletic director Jim Woodruff announced on Monday that the school has hired a varsity baseball and varsity girls basketball coach.

Public invited to annual meeting

The Catawba County Historical Association will hold their annual business meeting on July 28 and the public is invited to attend.

The event will highlight recent accomplishments, as well as showcase new and upcoming events and exhibits for 2014. Along with the events calendar, the membership will elect the slate of 2014 Board of Trustees and thank the outgoing board members.

CF Carroll hoping to lead Hickory back to states

Driven by his faith and fueled by his team winning, Phillip Carroll has become a spark plug in his final campaign for Hickory Post 48.

He is hoping to lead his team back to the North Carolina American Legion State Tournament — the same place it was at just two seasons ago.

Carroll’s approach this season has been to serve as a catalyst.

Bears continue search for three new coaches

The search for new head coaches in volleyball, cross-county and softball at Bunker Hill High School.

Bears athletic director Lee Miller said this week his hopes to have a new volleyball coach hired as early as this week.

Miller said he has talked to several potential coaching candidates, including one at the school, and also made several phone calls.
