Area firefighter arrested for misuse of funds

Lincoln County Sheriff’s detectives have charged a former Denver and East Lincoln Volunteer firefighter with obtaining property by false pretenses.

Lee Thomas Keever, 36, of, Denver, is charged with two felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, according to a news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Man pleads guilty to cab driver death

July 24, 2013

A Hickory man accused of killing a Hickory cab driver in 2011 pled guilty to first degree murder, and apologized to the family of the victim Wednesday morning at the courthouse in Newton.

Camyron Johnson, 22, was charged with first degree murder in the death of 32-year-old cab driver Adam Williams.

The judge sentenced Johnson to life without parole.

Search efforts continue for missing Claremont man

July 24, 2013

Catawba County emergency crews spent several hours Tuesday night and all day Wednesday searching for a man who disappeared while fishing along the Catawba River.

The missing man has been identified as Zoua Pa Chang, 30, from Claremont.

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said Chang went fishing with a friend around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

On the heels of potentially setting the franchise’s home run record, Hickory was denied its historic moment on Tuesday.

Charleston scored one run in the third, fourth and sixth innings and two in the seventh to come away with a 5-1 victory against the Crawdads at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Turnball graduates from Air Force basic training

 Air Force Airman James E. Turnball graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Weaver announces bid for Newton City Council

Hickory's C.J. Edwards part of trade to Chicago Cubs

Hickory Crawdads right-handed pitcher C.J. Edwards, above, was traded by the Texas Rangers along with fellow minor leaguers Mike Olt (Triple-A) and Justin Grimm (Class A) to the Chicago Cubs for right-handed pitcher Matt Garza on Monday night.

Edwards, who was scheduled to start for Hickory on Monday night against Charleston, was assigned to the Cubs High-A affiliate in Daytona, Fla.

Several new names added to prep football staffs

New additions to several Catawba County high school football coaching staffs were made on Monday.

These hires were made during Catawba County Schools July board meeting.

New Foard coach Tom Harper will retain most of the assistant coaches under former Tiger leader Jason Phelps, except for the addition of one new coach.
