Greene, Shelby slide by Hickory in game one, 5-4

Hickory had Shelby right where it wanted it in the first game of the Area IV semifinals on Tuesday.

However, Post 82 chipped away at an early four-run deficit inning by inning to come away with a 5-4 victory at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium.

Shelby (31-6) leads the best-of-five series with Hickory, 1-0, and remains undefeated this postseason (7-0).

Hickory’s Beard transitions from a player to a coach

From being a three-year player for Hickory Post 48 to serving as a first-year assistant coach, the American Legion baseball journey has come full circle for Cam Beard.

The former Bunker Hill High and current Catawba College standout hopes to give back to his American Legion program and build experience toward a future in coaching and teaching.

Two vehicle accident claims life

A motor vehicle accident  Monday night just after 8 p.m. claimed the life of a Morganton grandfather in Catawba County.

Elvis Heavner, 54, from J.B. Craig Road in Morganton died on impact when his 1991 Oldsmobile crossed the center line and struck a 1988 GMC truck driven by Dustin Pope of Newton.

Non-profit is vandalized
