Mark Story won’t return to coach Lady Trojans

Mark Story was coaching the Bandys girls basketball team during a tournament last week at Freedom High School.

Little did he know at the time it would be his last act as Lady Trojans coach.

Story will not return this winter to coach the Bandys girls basketball team after being hired by Catawba County Schools to be its new Career and Technical Education (CTE) director.

Hickory tallies 13 hits in victory against Shelby

Hickory head coach Fore Rembert shook up his line up Thursday, and Post 48 responded by shaking up the Area IV West standings.

Tallying 13 hits, Post 48 knocked off Shelby 8-5 in its home regular season finale at Henkel-Alley Field against Post 82.

Bobcats draft Indiana's Cody Zeller with No. 4 pick

The Charlotte Bobcats added a big man it desperately needed during Thursday’s NBA Draft.

The Bobcats took 7-foot University of Indiana power forward Cody Zeller with the fourth overall pick during the draft.

Charlotte was one of the teams that Zeller wanted to be chosen by.

Hickory's Gallo, Alfaro selected to MLB Futures Game

A pair of Hickory Crawdads will represent the Texas Rangers organization on a big stage July 14.

Third baseman Joey Gallo and catcher Jorge Alfaro were both selected to the 2013 Major League Baseball Futures Game at Citi Stadium in New York, N.Y.

The game is part of MLB’s All-Star festivities, which includes the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game.

Betty Ruth Helton, 71, of Newton died  Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton.  The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 28,  at 2:30 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Newton with Rev Tim Shook officiating.

Storm crosses county

A fast moving storm brought heavy rain and strong winds Wednesday afternoon through Catawba County but did minimal damage overall.

The most significant incident of the storm occurred at 1269 Long Drive in Newton when a large tree fell on an occupied house.

Four-run first lifts Shelby to 6-3 win against Hickory

June 27, 2013

Shelby made the most of its two-out plate appearance against Hickory on Wednesday.

Starting the bottom of the first with two-straight outs, Post 82 scored four runs on four hits and an error against Post 48.

That four-run inning helped propel Shelby to an eventual 6-3 Area IV West Division victory against Hickory at Hoyt Keeter Stadium.

Catawba County Health Partners’ Eat Smart Move More Catawba County (ESMM) coalition has recognized 36 Healthy Schools through the 2013 Healthy Schools Recognition Program. 

Now in its third year, the Healthy Schools Recognition Program has helped support healthier school environments for more than 20,600 students in public and private schools across the county.
