Newton CVS robbery suspect still at-large

Newton Police are looking for an armed suspect from a robbery and need your help in locating him.

Police say at 9:34 p.m. Wednesday night, they received a 911 call from the CVS Drugstore at 36 Northwest Boulevard, Newton. An employee informed the police they had just been robbed.

Newton man arrested

A quite street in Newton was just the opposite Thursday afternoon when a domestic situation spilled out into the neighborhood.

Newton Police officers were summoned shortly after 5 p.m., to a residence at 109 West Herman St., when a female called, stating that her boyfriend had assaulted her and was running through the neighborhood chasing people with a baseball bat.

John Flint Moore, 53, of Hickory died Monday, May 27, 2013 at Frye Regional Medical Center. The funeral will be 4 p.m.,  Sunday, June 2, at Horror Fields, Sawmills.

Carol Irene Taylor Webster, 70, of Conover died Monday May 13, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice.
 

Ribbon cutting today

The city of Newton plans to welcome new business Carolina Vines located at 19 N. College Ave., to the downtown area at noon today with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The event also serves as Carolina Vines’ grand opening.

Hickory overcomes early deficit, picks up third win

Hickory Post 48 overcame an early deficit on the road against Rutherford County on Thursday to pick up its third victory of the season.

Rutherford County (2-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the second, including a two-RBI double by Joel McDaniel, to take a 4-0 lead.

Luke Barton got the Post 48 rally started in the sixth inning with an RBI single to put Hickory on the board.

Panthers WR Smith: I want to play 15-16 seasons

CHARLOTTE — Steve Smith said the competition at the Panthers wide receiver position this year is "cut throat," and the 13-year veteran receiver plans to stick around to see how it shakes out.

Hickory survives 23-16 slugfest with Waynesville

Hickory Post 48 survived a four-hour slugfest on Wednesday with a 23-16 victory against Waynesville in both team's Area IV West Division opener.

After a 13-1 victory against Kings Mountain on Tuesday, Hickory improves to 2-0 on the season.

Waynesville, who is new to the Area IV West Division this season, falls to 1-1.

Clifford is officially introduced as Bobcats coach

The Charlotte Bobcats officially introduced Steve Clifford as their head coach on Wednesday during a press conference.

Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins and Bobcats General Manager Rich Cho were in attendance for the press conference.
Clifford, a tenured NBA assistant coach, becomes the sixth head coach in franchise history.
