Carroll Gabriel Lineberger Sr., 67, of Terrell passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. The Lineberger family is in the care of Robert F. Bennett, Funeral Service Licensee.

Payne convicted in child sex case

James William Payne, III, 47, of Newton, was convicted of Felony First Degree Sexual Offense with a Child and three counts Felony Indecent Liberties with a Child, Tuesday in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court.

Hickory Post 48 kicked off its season in style on Tuesday with a dominant performance against Kings Mountain.

Post 48 tallied 13 hits and starting pitcher Colton Allison only gave up six hits in a 13-1 victory against visiting Post 155 at Henkel-Alley Field.

County Agri-Tourism day set for June 15

Agriculture in Catawba County generates $52 million in direct economic impact with even more from indirect sources. There are more than 700 farming and agricultural operations in the county.

Anyone interested in learning more about this important sector of the local economy through tours of some of those operations is invited to the 2013 Agri-Tourism Day on Saturday, June 15.

Patrol reports 13 fatalities during Memorial Day weekend

The Highway Patrol announces a preliminary number of 13 motorists who died on North Carolina highways during the Memorial Day weekend.  The holiday weekend officially began at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 24, and ended at midnight, Monday, May 27.  Last year the Highway Patrol investigated five fatal collisions and 360 injury related collisions during the holiday period.

BREAKING: Stinson to lead N-C girls hoops program

Former N.C. State University and WNBA standout Andrea Stinson has been chosen to lead the Newton-Conover girls basketball program.

NCHS athletic director Billy Leeson sent out a press release Tuesday afternooon announcing Stinson's hiring.

Stinson replaces Ike Williams, who stepped down May 14 to take a position as an assistant women's basketball coach at Catawba Valley Community College.

BREAKING: Bobcats hire Clifford as next head coach

The Charlotte Bobcats have reached an agreement with Steve Clifford to become their next head coach, according to sources.

Clifford, a Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach last season under Mike D'Antoni, takes over the reins of the team from Mike Dunlap, who was fired after one year.

Harvick wins 54th Coca-Cola 600; Kahne second

Kevin Harvick won his second Coca-Cola 600 on Saturday and his second in the past three years.

Harvick becomes the 14th different driver to win multiple Coca-Cola 600s.

"It was just a great night," Harvick said. "(Crew chief) Gil (Martin) made a great call at the end, and we were able to put ourselves in position and survive up until to the point it was time to go."
