Defense and timely hitting helps Lady Bears win

Double plays on defense and doubles on offense defined Bunker Hill’s 4-2 softball victory against Draughn on Tuesday.

The Lady Bears (6-9, 6-4) made four inning-ending double plays in seven innings.

Offensively, Montana Lineberger’s two RBI double in the bottom of the third pace Bunker Hill.

Crawdads power their way past Tourists on diamond

Four Crawdads drove in two runs each, helping Hickory pick up an 11-4 road victory over Asheville in minor league baseball action on Tuesday.

Nick Williams, Joe Maloney, Nomar Mazara and Jordan Akins each had two RBIs for Hickory (6-7) in the win. Williams, Maloney and Akins also had a home run each.

Kia increases its GHC sponsorship

With 180 days until it kicks of its 11th annual event, the Greater Hickory Classic golf tournament announced some major sponsorship news on Tuesday.

Kia Motors, which has presented the Champions Tour golf tournament since 2006, has increase its sponsorship for the event this October.

Newton residents safe following Boston attacks

A pair of Newton residents, including 27-year-old Richard Harris and 31-year-old Jennifer Brown, appear to be safe following Monday's attacks at the 117th Boston Marathon.

Five Catawba County natives were among the field of 27,000 entrants in the Marathon, including Harris, Brown and Hickory residents Angela Hamilton, John Johnsen and Katie Ledford.

County athletes receive advice from ACC’s best

Catawba County prep basketball players collided on the court Saturday with top college basketball players for the 35th Annual ACC Barnstorming Tour at David Craft Gymnasium at Hickory High School.

Among the many college players in attendance for the event were Duke’s Ryan Kelly, Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry.
