2 Maiden, 4 Foard athletes sign with colleges

It was a busy day for Catawba County prep athletes on Thursday with six seniors signing to play in the collegiate ranks.

Among those that signed were two Maiden football players and four Fred T. Foard basketball players.

Panthers open at home, have 2 national TV dates

April 18, 2013

The Panthers open the NFL season at home for the first time since 2009 and will play two nationally televised games.

Carolina hosts Seattle in the Sept. 8 season opener.

Lawn mower accident injures yard worker

April 18, 2013

An early afternoon riding lawn mower accident sent a Newton man to the hospital Thursday. The accident happened on the corner of Boston Road and N.C. 10. 

Angie Queen, a nearby neighbor, identified the man on the mower as Pete Hollar.

Wreck injures dog

April 18, 2013

A single vehicle accident, Wednesday on a busy street in Newton closed the road for an hour and injured a dog.

Jonathan Fulghum was driving his Jeep Cherokee east on West 7th Street Extension near Little Hill Road when he reached down to use his cell phone.

Bunker Hill boys, Hickory girls win county track titles

There was a familiar feeling in the air during Wednesday's Catawba County track and field championship meet at Bunker Hill High School.

The Bunker Hill boys and Hickory girls teams repeated their performances from a season ago by each winning county titles.

Bobcats slip by Cavs, end season on winning note

Leading by as many as 24 points, the Charlotte Bobcats held off a second half surge by the Cleveland Cavaliers to come away with a 105-98 victory on Wednesday in the team's 2012-13 season finale.
