A Lincoln County traffic stop in Denver, resulted in two arrests and the confiscation of a half kilo of cocaine, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Magic's lead vanishes, Bobcats win their 17th game

Down 19 points and giving up nearly 40 points in the first quarter, the chances of the Charlotte Bobcats winning Wednesday night against the Orlando Magic looked bleak.

However, the 'Cats powered back behind 34 points each from Kemba Walker and Gerald Henderson to defeat the Magic 114-108 in a match-up featuring two NBA teams with the worst records.

Maiden SS Ortiz thriving on the baseball diamond

Maiden baseball player Randal Ortiz is living the American dream and playing the sport he loves after spending the first 16 years of his life in Puerto Rico.

Ortiz grew up in Bayamon — the second-largest city in Puerto Rico with more than 200,000 residents.

He started playing baseball at age 4 and was instantly drawn to the game.

Thomas Wayne “Sid” Coulter, 66, of Newton died Monday, March 25, 2013 at his residence. The Coulter family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Mayor visits preschool

Maiden Mayor Bob Smyre visited Mrs. Michele’s and Mrs. Brittnie’s four year old class at Rosenwald Preschool Academy on Wednesday, to promote the importance of reading.

Smyre read a couple of books to the class and fielded questions from his audience.

EASTER CLASSIC: Pairings for 23rd event released

The Catawba County Easter Baseball Classic enters its 23rd year on Monday at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds.

The tournament, which has become a yearly tradition amongst Catawba County prep baseball teams, starts this Monday and continues through Wednesday.

Harper hoping to build football family at Foard

After being officially approved by the Catawba County Schools Board of Education as the next football coach at Fred T. Foard on Monday night, Tom Harper had one goal in mind.
