Habitual felon charged with assault on a child

February 15, 2013

Felon and Catawba resident, Luther Dion Weaver, 42, was arrested around 6:15 p.m. on Thursday for Assault On A Child Under 12 and Resisting Public Officer. The two misdemeanor charges occurred at Weaver's residence of 309 South Main Street, Catawba. He is being held on two secured bonds of $1,000 each. His court date for the charges is March 20.

Neighbors Network hires director

The Neighbors Network Advisory Council has announced the hiring of Dianna-Lee Plover as the program’s first Director. 

Plover is a native of Folcroft, Penn. and currently lives in Conover.  

She is a graduate of Gardner Webb University and works for Challenger Early College High School.

Red Devils pin Panthers, advance to 2A dual final

It might have been Valentine's Day on Thursday, but there was certainly no love lost between Newton-Conover and Piedmont on the wrestling mat.

After matching up in the 2A dual team state playoffs three-straight years and losing each time, the Red Devils finally managed to knock out the rival Panthers to advance to Saturday's 2A dual team championship match.

Willa Dean “Dean” Hefner Hedrick, 76, of Conover, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013 at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  The Hedrick family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Love is in the air with Valentine’s Day weddings

Love was in the air, Thursday at the courthouse with 17 couples exchanging wedding vows and one couple renewing vows during the Valentine’s Day Weddings hosted by the Register of Deeds at the Catawba County Courthouse.

When their number is called, Ben Hughes and Ben Pitts step up when needed for their team.

Pitts and Hughes are two of four seniors on the Fred T. Foard wrestling team, including Nick Rotenberry and Mikey Vincent.

George's triple double leads Pacers over Bobcats

Paul George knew he needed to have a good game after the way he played Monday night.

George posted his first career triple-double with 23 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 12 assists, and the Indiana Pacers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 101-77 rout of the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night.

Red Devils, Tigers in dual playoff action Thursday

The third and fourth rounds of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) dual team wrestling playoffs are Thursday with two Catawba County teams in action.

Newton-Conover (40-5) is the only county team home tonight, hosting a trio of teams, including Thomasville (36-3), Owen (16-14) and Piedmont (31-5).

Tigers survive, advance to dual team round three

In the biggest match of its season so far on Tuesday, the Fred T. Foard wrestling team got a big boost from its seniors.

The veteran quartet of Nick Rotenberry, Mikey Vincent, Ben Hughes and Ben Pitts each picked up crucial mat victories, helping the Tigers edge North Gaston, 32-37, to advance to the third round of the 3A dual team state playoffs.
