The West Caldwell boys basketball team and East Burke girl basketball team advanced to the finals of the Catawba Valley 2A tournament with wins on Thursday at CVCC's Tarlton Complex.
The third-seeded Warriors knocked off No. 2 Newton-Conover to punch their ticket to the finals, while the second-seeded Lady Cavs defeated No. 3 South Iredell to advance to the championship game.

Wednesday, the State Bureau of Investigations notified the Hickory Police Department and the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office that the skull found off of Winkler Way in Caldwell County near N.C. 268 in April 2012 was Zahra Baker’s remains.
The Charlotte Bobcats were active during Thursday's NBA trade deadline, shipping Hakim Warrick to the Orlando Magic for forward Josh McRoberts.
McRoberts, a former Duke standout, has played in 246 career games in his six-year NBA career. He was a second round pick in the 2007 NBA draft by the Portland Trailblazers.

When it needed a boost to fuel its engine, the Bandys girls basketball tea became Madi Story powered.
Story scored 38 points, helping the Lady Trojans overcome a sluggish first half against Newton-Conover to advance to Friday's Catawba Valley 2A tournament championship game with a 75-58 win.

Greg Monroe scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, stepping up with Brandon Knight on the bench nursing a hyperextended right knee, to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 105-99 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night.
Knight had 21 points before injuring his knee late in the third quarter.

Juanita Garris Smyre, 78, of Newton, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. The Smyre family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremations in Conover.
This year marks the 16th annual Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival, held on Saturday, Mar. 23, at the Hickory Metro Convention Center in Hickory, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Each year more than 110 potters and vendors offer their wares and antiques for purchase to the public.
A Conover family was displaced early Tuesday morning by a fire. The residence at 5175 West Piedmont Circle was heavily involved with fire when St. Stephens fire fighters arrived. They were assisted by Oxford Fire Department and the American Red Cross. The fire is still under investigation.
