The Fred T. Foard boys basketball team advanced to the Northwestern 3A/4A tournament final on Tuesday with a 61-43 win against Watauga at David Craft Gymnasium.
The top-seeded Tigers (21-4) advance to Friday’s final where they will meet the No. 2 seed Hickory Red Tornadoes (21-5) in a rematch of this past Friday’s 62-59 win by Foard at Copas Gymnasium.

Julia Beatrice Campbell Beal, 87, of Newton passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Beal family.
Lori A. Mathes was appointed by the Catawba County Board of Commissioners on Monday, Feb. 25, as the County’s new Tax Collector. The decision was based upon staff’s recommendations at the Board’s meeting on Feb. 18.
Fire fighters from three counties battled a woods fire Monday that charred over ten acres of Little Mountain in eastern Catawba County.
