Freshman Alex Johnson is growing in his first season as a member of the Newton-Conover boys basketball program.
Johnson is one of a six freshmen boys listed on the varsity prep basketball rosters of the seven Catawba County high schools.
Coming off of an overtime road win against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday having won two of their last three games, things couldn't have looked brighter for the Charlotte Bobcats.
That was until Wednesday's match up with the Western Conference foe Utah.

The Carolina Panthers announced on Wednesday that David Gettleman is the team's new general manager.
Gettleman replaces Marty Hurney, who was fired on Oct. 22 after being with the team since 2002.
Spending the prior 13 seasons as the director of pro personnel for the New York Giants, Gettleman served as a senior pro personnel analyst for New York this past season.
The Newton City Council agreed to hire Newton attorney, John Cilley to replace longtime city attorney Larry Pitts who passed away last week.
“We cannot ever fill the shoes that Larry left but the board all felt comfortable with John,” Mayor Anne P. Stedman said.
City of Newton crews worked several hours Wednesday to restore water to over 140 residences in the Westview Heights neighborhood. The leak occurred at the intersection of West Hamilton Street and Westside Drive. The leak should be repaired by the end of the day according to city sources.
A judge agreed Monday to a continuance for Jeremy Mayfield’s, a former NASCAR driver, case in Catawba County Superior Court this week.
David Freedman, Mayfields’ attorney, and the district attorney’s office appear to be trying to work out a deal according to sources in the Catawba County Justice Center.
A Newton man was arrested early Monday morning with two arrest warrants against him.
Ryan Brandon Pressely, 28, of 3470 Robinson Rd., Newton, was arrested on one charge of First Degree Burglary at 2:20 a.m. Jan. 7, then charged again at 4 a.m. for a charge of Breaking and or Entering.

When Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap looks at point guard Kemba Walker he sees the NBA's next coming of Chris Paul.
Sounds like a reach, but that's how much faith Charlotte's rookie coach has in the second-year player out of Connecticut.
Dunlap has repeatedly told Walker "we're centering our team around you. You're that guy. Now live up to that billing and own what that means."
The trial of former Hickory High School boys basketball coach Shawn Johnson was continued Monday to the April 1 administrative court session due to a scheduling conflict with his attorney.
Johnson’s attorney, Lisa Dubs, has a murder trial starting this week in another county.
