Bandys picks up wins on court against Maiden

The Bandys boys and girls basketball teams were victorious on the road Friday against rival Maiden.

The Trojan boys held on late to pick up a 52-44 win against the Blue Devils, while the Lady Trojans used a second half surge to earn a 66-46 tally against the Lady Blue Devils.

Allran sworn back into Senate

Man arrested on sex charges

A Denver man has been charged with one felony count of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old female.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Detectives Sally Dellinger and Dan Renn arrested Glenn Andrew Morgan, 57, of 1865 N.C. 16, Denver, on one felony count of Statutory Rape/Sexual Offense of a 13, 14, or 15 year old by a defendant 6 years older. 

Discovery High students ‘perfect’

Two Discovery High School students have earned perfect scores on the SAT.

Senior, Hayden Frye earned a perfect 800 on the verbal portion of the SAT when he took the test in October.

Junior, Geoffrey McGee earned a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT when he took the test in December.

Challenger Firebirds swept on the court by Patriots

Challenger Early College High School and Piedmont Community Charter School clashed on the basketball court on Thursday.

The Patriots came away with a pair of victories in boys and girls competition against the Firebirds at the Newton-Conover High School gymnasium.

BREAKING: Browns hire Panthers' Chudzinski

Rob Chudzinski is returning home to his NFL roots.

The Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator has accepted the Cleveland Brown's head coaching position.

Chudzinski, who got his start in the NFL as a tight ends coach with the Browns in 2004 and the team's offensive coordinator from 2007-08, replaces Pat Shurmur as Cleveland head coach.

Candle starts house fire in Newton

The Newton Fire Department responded Wednesday to a house fire at 119 West G street at 2:55 p.m.

The units arrived to find the single story residence filled with smoke and the occupants all accounted for outside.

Fatal Conover accident

A single vehicle accident claimed the life of a Conover teen as he was driving home just after 2 a.m. Thursday morning.
