January 22nd
A Newton police officer and another motorist were injured in a two car collision Sunday afternoon at the intersection of U.S. 321 Business and Boundry Street in Conover. Both the officer and the driver of the passenger car were transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center for treatment. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident at the request of the Conover Police Department.
January 21st
The Charlotte Bobcats struggled to make free throws in a Saturday loss to Sacramento.
On Monday, giving them up was what cost the ‘Cats a chance at another victory.
The Houston Rockets made a season-high 32 free throws to come away with a 100-94 win against the Bobcats in a rare Monday matinee game at Time Warner Cable Arena.
Catawba County came up just short in its semi-pro football postseason appearance on Saturday.
Despite forcing seven turnovers, the Hornets fell to the Orlando Rage 28-24 in the Florida Bowl — part of National Bowl Weekend in Deltona, Fla.

Charlotte failed to make the most of its free chances on Saturday against Sacramento, and ended up paying the price.
The Bobcats (10-32) made just 26-of-38 shots from the free throw line in a 97-93 loss to the Kings at Time Warner Cable Arena on Saturday.

In front of a jam-packed crowd at St. Stephens High School on Friday, Logan Starkey’s clutch play late helped the Indians knock off Hickory, 53-42.
Tied 42-42 late in the game, Starkey connected on 3-pointers during back-to-back possessions to help give Saint the late edge and lead for good.

A little rest turned out to be the perfect slump-buster for the Charlotte Bobcats.
A jolt from their speedy backcourt didn't hurt, either.
Catawba Valley Community College has received a $470,000 Mid-Skills Training Initiative grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation. The grant will provide new and expanded training programs at CVCC in Mechatronics, Certified Production Technician and Certified Logistics Technician to address the newest challenge — shortage of skilled workers.
