Red Devil boys, Hickory girls both winners Tuesday

The Newton-Conover boys basketball team earned a 12-point victory against rival Hickory on the basketball court on Tuesday, 85-73.

Tuesday also marked the head coaching debut of Andy Poplin for Hickory. Poplin replaced Lavell Hall after last season.

Barnes re-elected chair, Isenhower tabbed vice-chair

NEWTON — The Catawba County Board of Commissioners is working to plan for next year, which included electing both a chairperson and vice chairperson of the board on Monday morning at the old Newton Courthouse.

Katherine “Kitty” Barnes, who served as chairperson in 2013, was re-elected to her position.

When it came time to electing a vice-chair, there was a change in leadership.

Newton holds annual 'Light Up the Town' celebraton

Unified Lady Trojans focused on successful season

The Lady Trojans are coming off a 27-3 season, which included a fourth-straight trip to the 2A West Regionals at UNC-Greensboro.

The Maiden tight end was spotlighted as a Community Captain before the Carolina Panther’s home divisional game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
