Wayne Elbert Bumgarner, 75, of Newton passed away at his residence on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013. The Bumgarner family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.

Newton Fire is preparing for its new home

The Newton Fire Department is currently operating out of the same headquarters it has been in for more than 50 years.

However, next year they hope to have a new home to move into.

Red Devils take down Indians on mat for win No. 8

Both coming off solid tournament wins during the weekend, Newton-Conover and St. Stephens collided on the wrestling mat Tuesday.

After the dust settled, the Red Devils picked up their eighth win of the season with a 50-9 take down of the Indians.

Morning melee mars motorists on Monday

Traffic was halted for hours Monday morning after a black car traveling northbound on U.S. 321 ran off the road, went underneath a cable in the median and struck an large delivery truck.

The accident took place just north of mile marker 37 at approximately 8 a.m.

Shooting suspect arrested Monday in Conover

December 10, 2013

A suspected gunman in a Rowan County shooting was arrested in Conover on Monday night.

Khari McClelland, 23, was arrested at a home on 167 8th Avenue SW in Conover on Monday afternoon.

McClelland is one of four men wanted in the shooting of 25-year-old Rowan County volunteer firefighter Marcus Kauffman.

Red Devils capture prestigious tournament title

December 10, 2013

The Newton-Conover wrestling team captured a prestigious tournament championship this past weekend, winning the Lake Norman Duals.

The Red Devils defeated White Oak (51-19), Pope (51-20), Pinecrest (63-16), Christiansburg (43-25) and Gilmer (39-24) on their way to an undefeated record at the event.

Bears defeat North Alabama to reach Final Four

HICKORY — The Lenoir-Rhyne football team held on to defeat North Alabama, 42-39, on Saturday at Moretz Stadium in an NCAA Div. II National quarterfinals.

The Bears (12-1), who have won a school-record 12-straight contests, will face 15th-ranked West Chester (13-1) in the national semifinals next Saturday in Hickory.

School systems are taking initiative to stop drop-outs

In the 2011-12 academic year, 13,768 N.C. students dropped out of school.

More than 8,000 of those were under the age of 17.

Two local schools have taken initiative in hopes of reducing those numbers. Newton-Conover City Schools and Hickory Public Schools have adopted legislation that will raise the drop-out age from 16 to 18, starting in the fall of 2014.
