Rachel Mae Kaylor Setzer, age 72, of Claremont died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church in Maiden prior to the service.

Chairman, vice chairman to be elected Monday

Local political insiders are apparently not expecting surprises when the Catawba County Board of Commissioners holds its annual reorganizational meeting Monday morning in the courtroom of the former county courthouse in uptown Newton (the current Museum of History).

At that session, the commissioners will elect a chairman to lead the board for the next year, as well as a vice chairman.

On Dec. 24, children tucked tightly in their beds will wait anxiously, looking forward to ripping through bows and shiny wrapping paper to get to their gifts on Christmas morning.

Not all children have the luxury of a list of toys from Santa, but Conover Police Department is working to ensure that those children get to share in the joy of Christmas as well..

Cockman Family concert benefits ‘Helping Hands’

For the second-straight year, the Cockman Family will be playing a special benefit concert at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.

A concert and poor man’s supper will be held at the church on Dec. 7. The supper will last from 5-6:30 p.m. with the concert on tap for a 7 p.m. start.

Tickets cost $7 and includes a men of pinto beans, cole slaw, cornbread, hot dogs, drinks and deserts.

There are 22,370 individuals living at or below the poverty level in Catawba County.

Of those, 2,134 are 65 years and older and 7,923 are children.

Catawba County’s local branch of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, a Feeding America food bank, works with partner agencies in the county to provide food to individuals like these in need.

Trojans overcome foul trouble, Vikings in victory

CATAWBA — Overcoming some early foul trouble, the Bandys girls basketball team defeated South Iredell, 66-38, in its home opener on Tuesday.

With the win, the Lady Trojans improve to 2-0 on the season.

Early run propels Trojans in win versus Vikings

CATAWBA — The Bandys boys basketball team used a 14-0 run in the second round to propel themselves past South Iredell en route to a 66-47 home victory on Tuesday.
