Wepner, Palozzi earn top SD-7 soccer honors

A pair of Newton-Conover soccer members earned top honors in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A in 2013-14.

The Red Devils' Franklin Wepner was awarded the conference's Offensive Player of the Year, while Angelo Palozzi was named SD-7 Coach of the Year.

Seven Catawba County athletes sign with colleges

Seven Catawba County athletes, including two each at Bandys, Bunker Hill and St. Stephens high school, signed with college and universities on Wednesday.

Russell resigns as Red Devils head coach

After a 2-9 season and missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons, Brint Russell has resigned as the head football coach at Newton-Conover High School.

Russell submitted his official letter of resignation on Wednesday to Newton-Conover City School officials.

Burning down to build

A set of buildings on the 200 block of South Brady Avenue were set on fire Wednesday to make room for the new fire station in Newton.

Emergency personnel were gathered at the set of buildings at around 3 p.m.

Part of South Brady Avenue was closed until the Newton Fire Department.

New boutique opens in Maiden

With a new store front, new location and new merchandise, Tanisha Fowler is ready to welcome customers into her boutique, Chic Armoire, located at 16 W Main St. in Maiden. Fowler opened her doors to curious locals on Oct. 7. During that time Fowler has welcomed more vendors into her store.

BREAKING: Russell resigns as Red Devils' coach

NEWTON — After a 2-9 season and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004, Brint Russell has resigned as the head football coach at Newton-Conover High School.

Russell submitted his official letter of resignation on Wednesday to Newton-Conover City School officials.

The search for a new head varsity football coach will start immediately.

Tigers can’t overcome Mavericks, snow in 4-1 loss

WAXHAW — Battling the elements and Marvin Ridge on Tuesday, the Fred T. Foard’s dream soccer season came to an end.

The Tigers gave up three first-half goals, falling to the Mavericks, 4-1, in the 3A West championship game.

Cory Morgan leaving Indians boy soccer program

HICKORY — Cory Morgan has stepped down as the head coach of the boys soccer team at St. Stephens High School.

Morgan gave his notice to school officials and notified the team of his decision on Tuesday.
