Blue Devils best Trojans in 61st gridiron classic

CATAWBA — The Maiden and Bandys football teams played in yet another classic on Friday night at Butler Stadium.

The Blue Devils (8-0, 4-0) took a 21-10 first half lead and held off a late second half charge by the Trojans to come away with a 21-19 SD-7 victory.

CONOVER — The first round of the Greater Hickory Kia Classic tees of on Friday at Rock Barn Golf & Spa.

The tournament wrapped up its pre-event festivities on Thursday with the final two Pro-Am tournaments.

Bobcats sink Sixers, win preseason game 110-84

CHARLOTTE — In front of 16,283 young men and women, the Charlotte Bobcats picked up a 110-84 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers in preseason NBA action early Thursday morning.

A 21-year-old Lenoir-Rhyne baseball player was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a train early Thursday morning about a mile from campus.

Sources have identified the victim as Ryan Hamner. A witness has said he appeared to be asleep on the tracks.

Professional golfer Rocco Mediate, above, was a member of one of 56 teams during Pro-Am action at the Greater Hickory Kia Classic on Wednesday.
