Last week couldn't have went better for Alex White.
The Maiden tight end and linebacker found out he was accepted to Harvard University, where he has verbally committed.
White is the second Catawba County athlete to commit to Harvard in the past two years. St. Stephens' Sava Turcanu is swimming for the Crimson this fall.
Jim Yandle, age 75, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Frye Regional Medical Center. The Yandle family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Cremations in Newton.
Brothers Jens Kruger (banjo, vocals) and Uwe Kruger (guitar, vocals) emigrated from Switzerland in 2002 to a place they call â€śa home away from home:â€ť Western North Carolina.
The brothers met bassist and New York-native, Joel Landsberg, in Switzerland and formed a trio in 1995, The Kruger Brothers.
NEWTON â€” On a night when the Newton-Conover soccer team honored its four seniors, it was a junior and a freshman that led the Red Devils to victory.
Alan Espirillaâ€™s goal with less than 10 minutes left was the difference maker for Newton-Conover in a 2-1 victory against West Caldwell at Gurley Stadium.

North Henderson (21-2) at St. Stephens (24-0), 6 p.m.
Fred T. Foard (16-8) at Carson (30-0), 6 p.m.
CONOVER â€”Â Michael Allen is the 11th Annual Greater Hickory Kia Classic champion.
Allen birdied the last two holes of his final round, including the first hole of a playoff with Olin Browne, to claim the title.

CONOVER â€”Â Bernhard Langer has the outright lead by two shots after the second round of the Greater Hickory Kia Classic.
Langer was 4-under on Saturday to improve to 10-under at the tournament. He leads a trio of golfers, including Michael Allen, Brad Bryant and John Riegger, by two strokes.

CONOVER â€” Eighty-one golfers started the three-day battle on Friday to attempt to master the 6,871-yard modified Champions Course at Rock Barn.
Three of those golfers â€” Bernhard Langer, Dick Mast and Anders Foresbrand â€”Â are tied for the lead heading into Saturday's second round of the 11th Greater Hickory Kia Classic.
