NEWTON â€” More than 1,000 boys and girls cross-country runners competed Wednesday at the 21st Annual United Way Unifour Invitational at Southside Park.
The course for this yearâ€™s event was extended an extra 80-100 meters to make it a true 5K race.
Runners participated in five races, including one mixed open race, two invitational races and two championship races.

Louise Keener Burris, age 91, of Newton passed away Monday, October 7, 2013, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Burris family.
Rebecca Cannon Sigmon, 71, of Hudson died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
City Council members in Conover acted unanimously this week on two initiatives intended to bring jobs to the area.
One action sets up an agreement to cooperate with Catawba Valley Community College in a program to encourage entrepreneurs.
The other measure offers incentives to existing industry HSM to bring in additional jobs at a very high rate of pay.
About three miles south of the Catawba County line, a 12-year-old girl waiting to board a school bus early Tuesday morning was approached by a man who asked her name, among other things, before inviting her to go with him.
