HICKORY â€” When undefeated Carson collided with unblemished St. Stephens on the volleyball court Tuesday, you knew something had to give.
The Lady Cougars (34-0) won a battle of volleyball titans against the Lady Indians in four sets to advance to Saturdayâ€™s 3A state championship game in Raleigh.
St. Stephens finishes its volleyball season with a 27-1 overall record.

The Southern District 7 Athletic 2A announced its awards for the 2013 prep volleyball season earlier this week.
A player from Bunker Hill and a coach from Maiden were the top honorees in the conference.

Earl Lee Barkley, 92, of Newton, NC, died peacefully at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC, on Thursday, October 24, 2013. The Barkley family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Cremations in Newton.
Some 4,000 people from around the region and beyond traveled Saturday to Plateau, in southwest Catawba County, for the 28th annual Hart Square festivital, featuring 97 historic structures dating from 1763 to 1860, along with artisan demonstrations.
