Trio of Red Devils lead conference honorees

Forty-six prep football players in Catawba County were honored as either All-Catawba Valley 2A or All-Northwestern 3A/4A selections following the 2012-13 season.

Leading those honored are a trio of Newton-Conover Red Devils, including quarterback Kevin Cline, kicker Chandler Johnson and head coach Brint Russell.

The Hickory boys basketball team suffered its second setback of the season on Thursday, falling on the road against Statesville, 90-78.

Jaquan Warren led the Greyhounds (3-1) with 22 points, while Justin Daniels added 17 points.

Raheim Connelly scored 18 points to lead Hickory (4-2).

Bobcats lose 10th straight, fall to Hawks 113-90

Kyle Korver thinks the Atlanta Hawks have been too hesitant to beat a struggling opponent decisively.

That wasn't the case this time.

Devin Harris scored 20 points, Josh Smith added 18 and the surging Hawks beat Charlotte 113-90 on Thursday night to hand the Bobcats their 10th straight defeat.

Red Devils continue momentum, take down Indians

Both coming off of impressive tournament victories this past Saturday, the Newton-Conover and St. Stephens wrestling teams faced each other on the mat Wednesday.

The Red Devils pulled out to an early lead and went on to win the intra-county match, 54-15, in Hickory.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Last-second 3-pointer lifts Foard

Jacob Schmidt connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Fred T. Foard boys basketball team to a 69-67 victory against West Caldwell at home on Wednesday.

Jordan Turner led the Tigers (6-0) with 23 points, while Spencer Matthews added 14 points. Schmidt scored nine points in Wednesday's game, including 6-for-6 on his free throw attempts.

Greater Hickory Classic returning to Conover in '13

While the PGA hasn't officially announced the 2013 Champions Tour schedule, one thing is for certain — professional golf will return to the Hickory Metro in 2013.

Officials at Rock Barn announced Wednesday afternoon that the Greater Hickory Classic will return for an 11th event on Oct. 14-20, 2013.

Panthers' Luke Kuechly wins weekly NFL honor

Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly was named the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week following his performance on Sunday.

Kuechly, a rookie out of Boston College, made 16 tackles (a career high) to help Carolina defeat rival Atlanta, 30-20. He currently leads the NFL in tackles with 130.

Trent Lowman succeeds father as football coach

Bandys High School is trading one Lowman for another as its football coach next fall.

The Trojans announced Tuesday that Trent Lowman, the youngest son of retiring head coach Randy Lowman, will take his father's place as the head coach at Bandys.

Tigers and Trojans tune up for Tigerland

The Bandys wrestling team hosed Fred T. Foard and Mooresville high schools in a tri-match on Tuesday in Catawba.

The Tigers earned a sweep of both squads, improving their overall dual record to 17-1 entering Saturday’s annual Tigerland tournament held at Foard.

Bandys (4-7) fell to Foard, 58-13, and Mooresville, 43-33, in Tuesday’s home match.

The Lady Tigers delivered the Lady Trojans their first loss of the season Tuesday in Newton.

Chelsea Turner led Foard (4-2) with 19 points, while Courtney Hull added 10 points.

Foard's Kayla Whitworth also recorded her third-straight double-double in Tuesday's game. Whitworth tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds.
