The inaugural Carolina Auto Racing Show kicked off Friday and continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hickory Metro Convention Center off Lenoir Rhyne Boulevard in Hickory.

The show features a variety of vendors from across the nation who are showcasing and selling products for racers, drivers and car fans.
The show also features models of various types of race cars.

Show officials expect to give away thousands of dollars in door prizes, too.
ASI Racewear, a race apparel company based in New York, is one of many vendors that is providing a display at the show.
A Newton police officer was transported to the hospital after being struck by a car just before noon Friday.
NPD Officer Evalenne Fowler, 86, was walking north across “A” Street at Main Avenue when she was hit by an older model mustang.

Fowler, a parking enforcement officer who patrols downtown Newton, was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries in her left leg and hip, Yarborough said.
The driver of the mustang, Linda P. Holland, 64, of Newton, was cited for failure to yield to a crosswalk, said Newton Police Maj. Kevin Yarborough.
A Hickory sex offender is in jail for having a Facebook site.
Catawba County sheriff’s deputies arrested Rusty Ryan Anderson, 21, of 1398 Finger Bridge Road in Hickory, on Wednesday after authorities discovered Anderson was unlawfully operating a Facebook social media page.
According to North Carolina General Statutes, registered sex offenders are prohibited from using social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, or any other site that provides social introduction for the purposes of friendship, meeting people or information exchanges, according to General Statute 14-202.5.

Tragedy struck Dec. 3 for Alleghany High School senior wrestler Luke Hampton.
During a meet at Hibriten High School, attended by both Fred T. Foard and Maiden High Schools in Lenoir, Hampton charged an opponent during a match at his 182-pound weight class.
The 17-year-old’s life changed forever.
Breaking his C5 and C6 vertebrae by striking a padded wall, Hampton, then ranked No. 1 in the state in his weight class, became paralyzed from the neck down.
The Hampton family immediately sought help. All of Catawba County’s prep wrestling teams answered.
The first-ever Carolina Auto Racing Show (CARS) starts today at the Hickory Metro Convention Center.
The show, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., continues through Saturday. Admission is $10.
Former NASCAR owner and current engine builder Robert Yates will be in attendance today from 11 a.m. to noon signing autographs at the Roush Yates Performance products display.

ATLANTA — Before the Atlanta Hawks took the court, Joe Johnson whispered a message to teammates Josh Smith and Jeff Teague.
"We have to take ownership," Johnson said, "at both ends of the court."
Clearly, they were listening.
Smith scored 30 points, Johnson added 23 and Teague chipped in with 16, leading the Hawks to a 111-81 rout of the Charlotte Bobcats on Thursday night in Atlanta's first game without All-Star center Al Horford.
