Ellen Christine Cauthen Isaac, 70, of Highland Bluff Court, Lincolnton, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2012 at her residence. Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Isaac family.
As Debbie Leatherman started speaking Tuesday, a vast collection of impoverished, homeless and hungry people starting âshushingâ a murmuring crowd. They wanted to hear her speak.
To the comforting aroma of vegetables and soup, buttery toast and cheese, Leatherman addressed the large crowd and did what she does every day â mother the needy.

Catawba County Public Health (CCPH) plans to study why some patrons of the Conover restaurant became sick and some did not after dining during that time period.
Randomly selected patrons will be interviewed about their dining experience, including what they ate at the restaurant.
Currently, CCPH has documented 133 reports of people who became ill after eating at Harbor Inn during those 10 days. The most recent illness report was documented Tuesday.
A 4-month-old puppy was euthanized after it was bitten by a rabid skunk in northeastern Catawba County during the weekend.
The rabies case is the county's second of 2012.
A homeowner on Oxford School Road recovered the skunk and submitted it to the State Health lab in Raleigh for testing.
The lab notified Catawba County on Tuesday that the skunk tested positive for rabies.
The puppy, which had not received a rabies vaccination, was euthanized.
No humans were exposed to the skunk.
Catawba County Schools (CCS) may have to dip into its savings fund in a big way next school year to deal with state cuts.
In a worst-case situation, the school system will have to take $4 million out of its fund balance to counteract state cuts for the 2012-13 school year and continue operating as it is, said CCS Superintendent Glenn Barger.
The budget announcement is based on worst-case-scenario projections from the state and could change as the state moves closer to approving its final budget.
SYDNEY â The Australian mother of a 10-year-old disabled girl who was murdered by her American stepmother in Hickory said Tuesday she has no idea what became of her daughter's ashes since the child's father brought them to Australia.
Attorney Shell Pearce said Monday that his client, Adam Baker, left the United States roughly two weeks ago at the behest of U.S. federal immigration officials, bringing the remains of his daughter, Zahra, with him for burial in Australia.
Zahra Bakerâs father has left the United States, and he took remains of his murdered daughter with him.

Kicking off their 20th anniversary campaign in style, the Hickory Crawdads hosted their annual Hot Stove Banquet at Rock Barn Golf and Spa on Monday.
The event featured a number of guest speakers, including former âDads general manager Marty Steele and former Hickory players Josh Bonifay (2000-01), Chris Mader (1993-94) and Jason Evans (1993).
Steele, who was teamâs first-ever general manager, recanted the first opening day at its new stadium.
The latest individual state prep wrestling polls include 31 Catawba County athletes ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.
The Retrorankings.com lists include 16 area wrestlers in the 2A ranks and 15 in the 3A ranks.
Four wrestlers from three schools are also ranked atop their respective weight classes. They include Newton-Conoverâs Ian Canrobert at 106, Foardâs Caleb Griffin at 120, St. Stephensâ Ian Martin at 138 and Foardâs Hayden Albert at 160.
