Maurice Centel Mayfield who has been charged with fatally shooting Billy Chad Dellinger appeared in District Court Monday to meet with his court-appointed attorney and to learn the date for his probable cause hearing.

The number of hungry families in Catawba County is growing, but a new grass roots relief organization is bringing families additional assistance by using a food donation method as simple as its name.

PORCH (People Offering Relief from Community Hunger) is a non-profit food assistance program designed to help those that are not fully served by existing relief organizations.

4 county soccer players chosen All-State by NCSCA

Four Catawba County soccer players were chosen by the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association (NCSCA) as 2012 All-State team members.

Among those athletes chosen include Newton-Conover's Chandler Johnson, St. Stephens' Andrew Barton and Hickory's Carlos Sevilla and Marcos Vargas.

Bucs roll to their sixth win, oust Belmont Abbey

The CVCC men's basketball team pulled out to a 30-point lead by halftime en route to a 87-57 victory against the Belmont Abbey JV on Monday, 87-57.

Rashawn Edwards led the Bucs (6-1) with 15 points, while Josh McClain and Jalen Cannady added 14 points each in a balanced scoring effort for CVCC.

Russell Westbrook tipped away a pass, got into the open court all by himself and then braced for a big take-off and a signature throwdown dunk. Instead, he meekly flipped the ball into the basket and grinned sheepishly at the Oklahoma City Thunder bench after the miscue.

Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick and running back LeSean McCoy are inactive for the Eagles' game against Carolina because of concussions.

Rookies Nick Foles and Bryce Brown will start in place of Vick and McCoy on Monday night. Foles will make his second career start at quarterback, and Brown his first at tailback.
