A person familiar with the penalty says the NFL has fined Panthers quarterback Cam Newton $21,000 for abusive conduct toward a game official.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity because the league hasn't announced the fine.
Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade was suspended one game without pay by the NBA on Thursday for flailing his leg and making contact with the groin of Charlotte Bobcats' Ramon Sessions.
Jan Brown would be considered a Catawba County transplant to some people. Brown is originally from Florida, but you wouldn’t know it by the stories she can tell about the little town of Catawba, where she resides now. Those many stories are what started Brown’s books, “Heartbeat of Catawba” Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

The People’s Bank Holiday Clash basketball tournament celebrates its 10th anniversary event this year. The Wolves are the host school for next week’s tournament.
Christmas came two days early for the Carolina Panthers in their final home game on Sunday.
Behind solid play from their defense, the Panthers won their third-straight game, knocking off the Oakland Raiders, 17-6, at Bank of America Stadium.

Cam Newton is on a torrid pace and the Carolina Panthers are headed toward another strong finish they hope will save coach Ron Rivera's job.
The second-year QB is in the best stretch of his young NFL career with 13 combined touchdowns and no interceptions in the past five games.

The Denver Nuggets' inside game was at its best on Saturday night.
Kosta Koufos scored a season-high 16 points, and Kenneth Faried and Andre Iguodala added 15 points apiece as the Nuggets beat Charlotte 110-88 and sent the Bobcats to their 15th consecutive loss.
