D. F. Wray, Jr., 92, of Conover passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at Brian Center in Viewmont. Born April 12, 1920 in Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late D. F. Wray, Sr. and Catherine Flynn Wray. D. F. was a member of Catawba Baptist Church and a veteran of the US Army. Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Wray family.
A Taiwanese lighting manufacturer with $31 million in annual retail sales opened its North American headquarters in Conover.
And company leaaders say the decision to come to Catawba County was driven, in part, by payback.

When Maiden traveled to Bandys for a battle of unbeaten girls tennis teams in the Catawba Valley 2A on Tuesday, something had to give.
The Lady Blue Devils won 5-of-6 singles matches, coming away with a 7-2 victory against the Lady Trojans in Catawba.
The Newton-Conover soccer team opened up play in the Catawba Valley 2A with a 4-0 shutout against Bunker Hill on Tuesday.

Lavell Hall was approved by the Hickory Public Schools board of education Monday night to serve as the interim boys basketball coach at Hickory High School.
