County continues with shelter expansion project

As the Catawba County Animal Shelter reaches capacity, Catawba County Board of Commissioners are working to construct a new facility.

“The capacity has reached as high as 259 animals,” Emergency Services Director Bryan Blanton said. “The problem is when you have animals that close diseases can spread and there is a safety issue.”

Manning, Giants shred Panthers in prime time, 36-7

While New York may be "The City That Never Sleeps," the Carolina Panthers were the ones left restless on Thursday night in Charlotte.

The New York Giants pulled out to a 20-0 lead by halftime and cruised to a 36-7 primetime victory over the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

Bandys' Cassidy Shell is 22-0 on court this season

Having played tennis since she was age 6, Cassidy Shell is shining bright on the Bandys tennis team.

As of Wednesday, Shell is 22-0 on the court in both singles and doubles play.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Red Devils edge Trojans on court

The Newton-Conover volleyball team avenged a loss to Bandys earlier in the season with a five-set victory Thursday at home 17-25, 25-10, 25-20, 15-25 and 15-7.

The Lady Red Devils improve to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in the CVAC.

Kayla Champion led the Lady Trojans (6-7, 5-3) with 12 kills, 10 digs, five aces, three assists and three blocks.

Lady Blue Devils climbing the CVAC volleyball ranks

A year after finishing tied for third in the Catawba Valley 2A, the Maiden volleyball team is on the edge of the top of the conference standings.

The Lady Blue Devils are 10-3 this season with a 7-1 mark in the CVAC.

The Fred T. Foard volleyball team bounced back from a tough conference loss with a straight-sets victory over Bandys on Wednesday 26-24, 25-23 and 25-18.

Morgan Smith led Foard (13-5) with seven kills, while Madison Hayes added six kills.

Gaosee Vang paced Bandys (6-6) with 25 asssists, four aces, five kills and five blocks.

UNC's Roy Williams has surgery for kidney tumor

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina coach Roy Williams has begun recovering from surgery Wednesday to remove a tumor from his right kidney and is expected to be on the sideline when the season starts.

Still, the coach might need another operation to remove another tumor from his left kidney.
