Gary Lee Pope, 64, of Conover died Aug. 30, 2012 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. The Pope family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Laboring for a good cause

With The Corner Table soup kitchen closed for the Labor Day holiday, Center View Baptist Church members spent their day laboring to feed the hungry in the soup kitchen’s absence.

Concord rallies to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne, 24-21

September 2, 2012

Concord rallied from a 21-point deficit to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne, 24-21, in the season opener Saturday evening at Callaghan Stadium.

The contest was delayed one hour due to severe weather.

The Mountains Lions' Andy Ellington kicked the game-winning field goal from 41 yards out with 11:14 remaining in the fourth quarter to complete the rally.

WINSTON-SALEM — Redshirt freshman Deandre Martin scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run as Wake Forest came from behind to defeat Liberty 20-17 Saturday.

The Flames led 14-7 late in the third quarter when Wake Forest safety A.J. Marshall stepped in front of a Brian Hudson pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown to help turn the tide.

Mountaineers fall to Pirates in season opener, 35-13

GREENVILLE — East Carolina recorded 390 total yards and forced three turnovers as the Pirates defeated Appalachian State 35-13 at home Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Rio Johnson threw for 242 yards and Michael Dobson added 78 yards rushing for the Pirates, who have won 32 of their last 37 games when scoring 30 or more points.

Cline’s 298 yards lifts Red Devils, Russell to first win

Quarterback Kevin Cline made sure Newton-Conover’s third game was its charm.

The senior signal-caller combined for 298 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Red Devils win their first game of the season, 50-3, at St. Stephens on Friday night in Hickory.

“We practiced (passing) all week and ran it in warm-ups,” Cline said. “We got the ball to our athletes and let them run.”

Hickory survives Maiden rally, holds on for 27-25 win

Hickory built an early lead and fought off a late rally by Maiden to come away with the 27-25 home victory at Frank Barger Stadium on Friday.

The Red Tornadoes (2-1) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when quarterback Matt Williams found receiver Daniel Davis for a eight-yard touchdown that capped an 80-yard drive.

Mustangs top Trojans, spoil Lowman's shot at win 200

Bandys fell behind at halftime, while East Lincoln continued to pile on the points and the yards in the second half on its way to a 48-20 road win in Catawba on Friday.

Another second half surge sends Bears to 3-0

Bunker Hill outscored North Lincoln 33-9 in the second half on its way to a 39-16 victory over the Knights in Claremont on Friday.

It was the third time in three weeks that the Bears (3-0) have trailed at halftime only to dominate the second half.

Benfield's late TD run helps Tigers improve to 2-1

A 36-yard run by Sam Benfield with 2:13 left ended up being the winning score, lifting Fred T. Foard to its second victory of the season, 34-41, over West Lincoln.

Benfield rushed nine times for 123 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, including the game's opening score on a 39-yard run.
