JV FOOTBALL ROUND-UP: Thursday's area scores

Jayvee football season continued on Thursday with seven match ups featuring seven Catawba County football squads.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Maiden falls in 5 to South Iredell

Maiden lost to South Iredell on the volleyball court Thursday in five sets in a battle of top teams in the CVAC 22-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 13-15.

Mckenzie Garrison led the Lady Blue Devils (12-4, 8-2) with 29 kills and three blocks. Kha Xiong added 11 kills and two blocks.

Defensively, Rachel Cook tallied seven blocks for Maiden.

Calvin Lynn Christopher, 41, of Catawba, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Christopher Family.

Weiss sentenced

Following a three-day trial, Anthony Parks Weiss, 33, of Sherrills Ford, was convicted of felony robbery with a dangerous weapon in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court.

Minor porch fire

September 27, 2012

Claremont and Catawba firefighters examine a structure after a small porch fire was extinguished after lunch Wednesday on Boggs Road. The fire damaged the porch flooring but did not significantly damage the home. the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Students take safe-driving pledge

Two local high schools and their students took a pledge to not text and drive.

Hickory High School and Newton-Conover High School students have pledged to put their phones down while driving.

Lady Bucs off to a 14-0 start to the season

Off to one its best starts in program history, the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team is focused on one goal this season — making the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament.

Under fourth-year head coach Shannon Hudson, the Lady Bucs are 14-0 overall this season, including a 6-0 record in Region X play.

Boyles, Rayfield win county races; Foard takes titles

Maiden's Corbin Boyles and Fred T. Foard's Kaitlyn Rayfield took top honors at Wednesday's Catawba County Cross-Country championships at Southside Park in Newton.

The Tigers snagged both team titles at the event, claiming the boys title by 35 points from Bandys and the girls title by 29 points from Hickory.

PREP NOTEBOOK: Red Devils bounce back with win

A goal by Luke Hart with a minute to play lifted Hickory to a 2-1 victory over the rival St. Stephens on Wednesday.

It was the second-straight game that Hickory (13-1-0, 4-1-0) won by a 2-1 margin. They defeated Hibriten on Monday by the same tally.

The Red Tornadoes took a 1-0 lead behind a Carlos Sevilla goal on an Conner Hartman assist.

Hands-on learning

Local school children learn outdoors Tuesday during Environmental Field Days at Newton’s Southside Park.

The two-day event started last Thursday and rounded out the active learning Tuesday, Sept. 25. During the event, fifth graders from across Catawba County learned about environmental awareness from different environmental departments from the county.
